History [edit]

Formation and beginning years (2003–2006) [edit]

In 2003, singer and guitarist Scott Hutchison used the proper name Frightened Rabbit, which came from a name his female parent gave him in his youth due to his chronic shyness,[six] as a phase moniker for his solo shows. The project became a full-fledged ring with the addition of his brother Grant Hutchison on drums in 2004, and guitarist Billy Kennedy in 2006. During early shows, the band would requite out their email address for those interested in receiving a complimentary demo. Afterward a time during which few demos were sent out, Scott said that he would send out biscuits with the music, which led to a rise in requests for the demo. This led to a lasting impression with the recipients.

I'd send them to the U.S. and stuff, and they'd turn up as bags of crumbs, just I call up information technology's still something that people will remember. I don't know, I suppose it was only one of those little things that people volition remember, rather than making it disposable and forgettable.

Sing the Greys (2006–2007) [edit]

The band released their debut album Sing the Greys in May 2006 on local label, Hits The Fan.[seven] The band was offered a deal from Fiction Records merely ultimately the label withdrew their offer.[viii] In Jan 2007, The Self-Starter Foundation brought the band to the East Declension of the United States for a short tour. The band supported Death Cab for Cutie during their November 2008 UK & Irish tour,[sixteen] and released a live album, Quietly At present! in October.[17]

Maybe it'll only exist a niggling less focused on me".[19]

Hutchison subsequently appear plans to head to Crail, Fife to write material for the ring'southward third studio anthology:[20]

The theme I'm going for is pushing yourself out to the border of things and being solitary, feeling lost and not knowing where yous are, which is how I've felt recently. It'southward not all fun and games, but hopefully it'll just be less obviously personal and savage than the last record. Less oppressive.

In May 2009, a video appeared online of Hutchison performing a new runway, entitled "Swim Until You lot Tin't Encounter Land".[21] The song was subsequently revealed as the first single from the forthcoming third album.

In October 2009, the band members unveiled the album's title, The Winter of Mixed Drinks, and appear the arrival of a fifth band member, Gordon Skene (formerly of Make Model). According to Scott Hutchison:[22]

A lot of the new record is heavily layered and it felt similar likewise much for the iv of united states of america to do. We demand another member to get them at their full impact. I dunno, we're kind of bored of each other. We but need to add some fresh meat.

The Winter of Mixed Drinks was released in March 2010.

The band made their US boob tube debut on Late Nighttime with Jimmy Fallon on 25 May 2010, performing "Nothing Like You lot". In June 2010, they appeared on The A.Five. The ring announced that on 1 May 2012 they would start recording the fourth album.

The fourth album will also marker the outset time for the band that it is non Scott Hutchison solitary with the task of songwriting, with Hutchison saying that "it's done cipher but benefit the new songs." The album is expected to be released early on in 2013, preceded by an EP, entitled Country Hospital, featuring Scottish vocalist Aidan Moffat, released 25 September 2012.[29]

Owl John and Gordon Skene's departure (2014–2015) [edit]

Regarding a forthcoming fifth studio album, Hutchison noted in Oct 2013: "We're going to have to start thinking about the next record subsequently this tour. We've done a lot of writing in Scotland, but information technology would be practiced to shift it up a gear and become out of the condolement zone, away from what we're used to, and over [in America] would be good for that. So the only worry, especially on the West Coast and California, is the effect that may have on my writing, and whether I would be all happy and total of vitamins."[30]

In January 2014, Scott Hutchison revealed plans to record a solo anthology, stating: "With Pedestrian Verse being more collaborative, I said I'd never write a Frightened Rabbit tape in the mode I used to, which is true. But information technology doesn't mean I don't want to write any records like that. It'south going to be really pleasant to go back to that style of working, where I sit around and do stuff myself."[31] Both keyboardist and guitarist Andy Monaghan and touring fellow member Simon Liddell collaborated with Scott on the project, which was after named Owl John.

On 25 March 2014, Gordon Skene departed the band attributable to "differing opinions" with the iv other members. The band wrote on Facebook: "There is no more than to tell other than sometimes things just don't work out and when people have differing opinions often the best pick is to only office ways and go on with life separately."[32]

In Feb and March 2018, Frightened Rabbit embarked upon a ten-year anniversary tour in support of The Midnight Organ Fight. Regarding the possibility of new material and a possible sixth studio album, Scott noted that the band were building a dwelling studio in Glasgow, and working on songs: "We've got similar five or six songs that are sketchy. And then in that location are a lot of pieces of music that don't have lyrics on them nonetheless, merely that's coming together. I would similar for that to be finished by the end of the year. We're just going to constantly evolve it. I've been certainly trying to await for new themes. In that location's one that's currently well-nigh how I question whether or not I would exist willing to bring a child into the world as information technology stands. Non that I'one thousand in any position to practice and so at all, but you know… I'm trying to find different things cause it'south anthology six, and I can't practice this all fourth dimension time, you know. I don't think anybody really gives a fuck about my relationships any more. So yeah, I'll try and steer clear of that".[36]

On 9 May 2018, Scott Hutchison was reported missing past Scottish police and the members of Frightened Rabbit.[37] Hutchison was final seen early on the morning of 9 May leaving a hotel in Southward Queensferry.[38] His blood brother and band-mate Grant, on the band's official Twitter account, urged anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact Police Scotland.[39] On 10 May, law constitute a body at Port Edgar in Southward Queensferry, which was the adjacent solar day confirmed to be Hutchison's.[xl]

The band issued a argument following Hutchison's expiry:

There are no words to describe the overwhelming sadness and pain that comes with the decease of our honey Scott, merely to know he is no longer suffering brings us some condolement. Reading letters of support and promise from those he has helped through his art has helped immensely and we encourage y'all all to proceed doing this. He will exist missed by all of the states and his absence will always be felt just he leaves a legacy of promise, kindness and colour that will forever be remembered and shared. Rest peacefully Scott. Much honey.

In the run-upwardly to the covers album's release, the remaining members of the band gave several interviews, stating that "the band does not exist" without Scott. It was also mentioned that there were demos already recorded for the band's planned sixth anthology and that these materials may still exist released by the ring.[four] [5]

In January 2022, following the release of the lyrics volume, The Work, Grant Hutchison noted that the band could work on Scott's 6th album demos in the near futurity: "I call back we exercise feel like maybe [this] year at some signal we could either sit in a room or but separately pick up our instruments and play forth to those demos and maybe revisit them and go them out there. Whether it's in an anthology format or whether nosotros just determine to release them as we feel they're set, I think nosotros experience a responsibility there to kind of finish off unfinished work for sure."[45]

Band line-upwards [edit]

Concerning the band'due south line-up, Scott Hutchison noted in 2008: "The initial lineup in Frightened Rabbit was simply myself. I had really only been messing with my iv track for almost 6 months before I started playing some shows on my own. Some of the songs still didn't take words and I was mostly but mumbling nonsense one-half the fourth dimension. Grant joined a year later, making the outfit much noisier. Billy came along most 6 months later this and actually fabricated it a bit less noisy. He's very calming like that is Billy. Andy has been in the band since January, and adds all the extra details we were missing before. Even so not sure if we're finished gathering members".[18]
